How do I deal with my introverted boyfriend?

I am currently dating one of my best friends, and we've recently become more serious. When we are together, we get along wonderfully, but as our relationship is long distance, this doesn't happen as often as we'd wish. He goes to college one state over, and I see him for a weekend approximately every few weeks or so. While I thrive on going out with other people, he prefers to spend time snuggling or watching movies, and has many of the characteristics of an introvert. When we are apart, I get frustrated with these traits, and have trouble coping with the problems they pose. He will have trouble expressing his feelings for me when we not together, though he insists on Skyping almost every day. When our conversations come to a pause, I tend to fill the spaces with meaningless babble about my day or a book I'm reading to avoid sitting in silence. While I am confident that he loves me and know that he is incredibly loyal, I can't help but feel hurt when he doesn't have as much to share with me as I do with him. I am far from a needy person, but I wish I could convey to him that he needs to meet me halfway in order for this to work, without risking hurting his feelings. Any advice?
