Is it dangerous to eat oysters, clams and/or mussels that we harvested from saltwater marshes?

We just moved to Charleston, SC and my husband spent his day off hunting for shellfish in the marshes. Before we cook them for dinner, I am trying to set my mind at ease that we are not going to be poisoned or something.
