Question about Covalent Bonds?

Can someone explain why some covalent bonds have double bonds and some have single and triple. I know that covalently bonded atoms have shared electrons but why is there double bonds and stuff like that? Also, if you find a site that is not too advanced, could you give me the link. And no, this isn't homework we just learned something about covalent bonds in cl and I just don't get it.
